NMUSD welcomes return of students on first day, with one new policy change in place (latimes.com subscription) — Families across Costa Mesa started the new Newport-Mesa school year under a stricter bike policy that bans e-bikes for TK–8 students and requires permits and safety training for all student cyclists. The district is emphasizing education over punishment as staff spread the word about the new rules while welcoming nearly 18,000 students back to campuses.
   

3. Shooting in a Stater Bros. parking lot in Costa Mesa leads to arrests of man, woman (ocregister.com) — A person was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound after a shooting Tuesday morning in the Stater Bros. parking lot on Newport Boulevard in Costa Mesa. Police later arrested a man and woman at a nearby apartment complex, though investigators have not yet detailed what led to the violence or released the names involved.
   

4. California investing $95M for more EV and hydrogen fueling stations (ocregister.com) — California is putting $95.2 million into new EV charging and hydrogen fueling stations, and companies with sites in Costa Mesa, like Rove, could benefit from future grants. The state says at least half the funds must serve low-income and disadvantaged communities, while a separate rebate program aims to make first-time EV purchases more affordable.
