Authorities ID Man Fatally Shot By Culver City Police

CULVER CITY, CA — Authorities Friday identified a man who was fatally shot by Culver City police after allegedly charging at officers while armed with a knife during an incident that left an officer wounded from so-called friendly fire.

Jesse Vanloozen, 34, was shot on Monday afternoon and died at a hospital, according to the coroner's office and the Culver City Police Department. His city of residence was not known.

Officers were dispatched to the 8800 block of Washington Boulevard, near Landmark Avenue, about 2:25 p.m. Monday in response to a report of an armed man, according to Culver City police.

Officers located the man at a commercial parking structure and he "attempted to elude them within a stairwell," according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the shooting.

"A short standoff ensued and as the officers attempted to communicate with the suspect, he suddenly charged at the officers while armed with a knife," Navarro-Suarez said.

The shooting occurred about 3 p.m. on the parking structure's roof.

One officer was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound apparently caused by friendly fire, the sheriff's department reported. His vital signs were reported to be stable, Culver City police said.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office and the sheriff's department are investigating the shooting.
