Culver City Celebrates Pride, Mourns Roe Decision

A vigil for Roe v. Wade was followed by a Pride rally and bike ride across the city.

CULVER CITY, CA — Culver City had a busy weekend: it hosted a 6-mile Pride Ride and rally Sunday and a vigil to mourn the overturning of Roe v. Wade Friday. Both events were organized by Culver City Pride.

The Pride Ride took cyclists six miles of Culver City neighborhoods. The Pride Rally took place on Main Street in Downtown Culver City and featured food, entertainment, and a number of distinguished speakers, including:

  • Culver City Mayor Daniel Lee
  • Culver City Councilmember Alex Fisch
  • State Senator Sydney Kamlager (D-30)
  • Assemblymember Isaac Bryan (D-54)

Rollerskater Kelsey Guy and drag queens Sweet Tea and Alexis Maarte performed.

Friday was a more somber affair as crowds gathered in Culver City to protest the Supreme Court decision released that day. “I believe that hope is a discipline and I am resolved to fight,” said Culver City Councilmember Yasmine-Imani Mcmorrin. “I will not accept this future for myself, for my daughter. We deserve better.”

“Today is a day in a long line of powerful people and privileged principalities exerting themselves over the disenfranchised, the marginalized and the ostracized,” said Rev. Francis Rosenau of the Culver City Presbyterian Church. “It is a bleak place where we are today. But it is not a place that we stay.”
