Culver City Lacrosse Looks to Rebound

Softball and volleyball teams play key league games.

After opening the season with three straight victories, the boys lacrosse squad has hit a bump in the road, dropping three of its last four games. Right now, the Centaurs are in fourth place in the standings behind Palos Verdes, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa and Redondo Union.

Coach 's team lost to Redondo Union 10-9 last Wednesday and hosts Mira Costa on Friday at 4 p.m. The Centaurs (4-3 overall, 3-3 in league) will look to shore up their defense, which has surrendered 54 goals over the last four games. 

Culver City's girls squad, meanwhile, is still in search of its first win. The Centaurs managed to score just nine goals in their first seven games and are tied for sixth in the standings with Downey. Culver City hits the road for its next three games, beginning with a 7 p.m. game Friday at Mira Costa.

Baseball

's team continues nonleague play Wednesday 3:15 p.m. when it hosts El Segundo, then hosts Gabrielino at the same time next Tuesday. Senior third baseman is batting .435 and slugging .652 and pitcher has allowed eight hits and six earned runs in 10 1/3 innings.

Softball

Culver City (7-1) brought a four-game winning streak into Tuesday's opener at archrival Beverly Hills and travels north to Canyon Country for the Canyon High tournament, playing the host Cowgirls (6-5) first at 3:15 p.m.

The Centaurs, coached by , finished tied for second place in league with Hawthorne last season. The team capitalized on nine errors by Lawndale Leuzinger to win last Tuesday's nonleague game 17-0 in five innings. Culver City has scored 88 runs and allowed 25 so far this spring. 

Boys Volleyball

The Centaurs fell to 0-3 in the Ocean League with last Thursday's four-set loss to archrival Beverly Hills. After winning the first set 27-25, Culver City dropped the next three,  25-23, 26-24, 25-21, despite 23 kills by and 45 assists by . Prior to that, the Centaurs lost twice to Santa Monica, in four and three sets, respectively.

Culver City (5-7) resumes league play April 14 at Inglewood. Aguila, a senior outside hitter, leads the team with 132 kills, 178 digs and nine aces. Senior middle blocker has 58 blocks.
