Coroner IDs Man Killed In San Tomas Expressway Street Race

BREAKING: Officers still searching for driver of silver Acura TSX or TL also involved in incident near Homestead Road.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA – A 20-year-old man killed when he crashed a car immediately after a street race in Santa Clara Sunday afternoon has been identified as 20-year-old Juan Mayoral-Ocampo of San Jose, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

Mayoral-Ocampo was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro on northbound San Tomas Expressway where he was racing with a silver Acura TSX or TL around 12:30 p.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Ross Lee said.

Witnesses reported that both cars were traveling around 100 mph before coming to a stop near slow traffic at the intersection with Homestead Road, Lee said.

The Chevy swerved to the right and crashed into a sidewalk before it became stuck between a tree and sound wall, according to Lee.

The Chevy then caught on fire, but investigators believe Mayoral-Ocampo died in the preceding crash, Lee said.
