Sanitation Services for Homeless Encampments

The City has partnered with Recology Cupertino to offer trash removal at both homeless encampments on Wolfe Road. Bins will be placed at the sites on Thursday, June 4. Pickups will be on Mondays and Fridays. The City is also looking into adding washing stations and portable toilets at the sites. This is being done to ensure that there are sanitary conditions at both sites for the health and well-being of the encampments’ members and those living nearby.

Homeless encampments cannot be broken up during the pandemic unless individual housing units are identified, according to CDC guidelines. The CDC states: “Clearing encampments can cause people to disperse throughout the community and break connections with service providers. This increases the potential for infectious disease spread.” Due to this guidance, the County of Santa Clara has exempted the homeless in its Shelter-in-Place Order.
