Cupertino Power Outage: PG&E Starts Safety Shutdown

CUPERTINO, CA — The second phase of PG&E's Public Safety Power Shutoff hit Santa Clara County late Wednesday night. The outages were expected to leave more than 38,000 county residents without power.

Initially scheduled to start around noon, the shutoff was delayed multiple times due to changes to the weather forecast, according to PG&E. The second phase will impact service for about 234,000 customers in the Bay Area and Sierra Foothills, according to PG&E.

The first phase of power outages started around midnight Wednesday in the North Bay.

As of Thursday afternoon, here's what the outages around Cupertino looked like, according to a PG&E online map:

The shutoffs come as strong, dry winds are set to hit the area, creating a fire risk. The outages could last longer than 48 hours, and the agency is recommending that households prepare for the possibility of several days without power.

As of Thursday afternoon, here are the latest updates on what's happening around Cupertino (keep checking throughout the day for the latest):

  • Most, if not all, power in the city has been restored, the city of Cupertino said shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday. If your power is not back on, tell the city by calling 408-777-3200.
  • The city is opening charging stations at the following city facilities:
    • Quinlan Community Center, 10185 N. Stelling Road. Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.; Saturday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Closed Sunday
    • Teen Center, 21111 Stevens Creek Boulevard (Teens ONLY). Monday-Friday 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.; Saturday 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Closed Sunday
    • Senior Center, 21251 Stevens Creek Boulevard. Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Saturday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Sunday 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Residents can tune into Radio Cupertino at 1670 AM for updates
