GIRLS TENNIS: Homestead Edged By Milpitas

Mustangs sweep all three doubles matches but fail to slow down undefeated Trojans in singles play.

The Homestead High girls tennis team took the undefeated Milpitas High squad to the brink, but couldn't close the deal Thursday afternoon at Homestead High.

Homestead won all three doubles matches, but were swept in the four singles matches and fell 4-3 in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division match.

The No. 1 doubles duo of Monica Cheng and Hannah Huang won their match in two sets over their Trojans opponents. Sarah Lee and Jessica Chiu also won their doubles match.

"Monica and Hannah won an exciting, hard-paced battle," Homestead head coach Louie Alicea Jr. said. "We're 13-5 overall now and 8-3 in league play."

Top singles play Jasmine Stoy held her ground, but eventually fell to Milpitas' top player Christi Tain.

Homestead has a bye next Tuesday before returning to wrap up league play at Wilcox on Thursday.

The SCVAL league playoffs begin on the following week.
