April 8, 7:15 pm, Movie Night at St. Jude's, Cupertino. St. Jude’s Social Justice/Outreach committee sponsors the movie; John Brown’s Body at San Quentin Prison. This moving film by Joe De Francesco documents a production by prisoners at San Quentin of the 1929 Pulitzer Prize-winning epic poem about the abolitionist firebrand, John Brown. The mixed-race cast is transformed by their three-year experience preparing and presenting the play about slavery, freedom and the Civil War. Stephen Winn, drama critic of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote of the original production, “a nine man ensemble of murderers and career felons brought art and life, aspiration and reality, into stark and telling relief… the two night run of this historical drama opened a powerful lens on contemporary prison life and the nature of freedom and responsibility.” The film runs 75 minutes with a brief discussion following.
