Man, 79, Held For Attempted Murder In Cupertino Shooting

Breaking: A Sunnyvale man is accused of shooting a Cupertino man in front of the 48-year-old victim's residence.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA -- A 79-year-old man remained behind bars Monday on suspicion of attempted murder in a shooting reported Saturday in Cupertino. According to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, Sunnyvale resident Richard Lane allegedly shot a man in front of the victim's home on Martinwood Way in Cupertino.

Sheriff's Sgt. Rich Glennon said the shooting was reported at about 7 p.m.; deputies responded to find the victim, a 48-year-old man, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Neighbors had reported hearing the sound of a gunshot and a man yelling that he had been shot, Glennon said.

"The victim and suspect knew each other," Glennon said in a news release Monday.

Lane, who allegedly drove away from the scene prior to deputies' arrival, was determined to be the suspect in the shooting and was taken into custody at 11:10 p.m. Saturday when authorities spotted him driving in the city of Sunnyvale.

Lane was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail, where he was being held on no bail pending a court appearance at noon Wednesday, jail records showed.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and his injuries are believed to be non- life-threatening, Glennon said.
