Photo Essay: Memorial Park
The water drained, the trees bare with winter, the pathways empty—the park is still a peaceful place to exercise or contemplate the war memorial.
The war memorial near the Stevens Creek entrance honors fallen service members from the area. A statue of two soldiers called "The Guardians" represents Matthew Axelson and James Suh, U.S. Navy SEALs killed in Afghanistan. The dedication ceremony for the memorial took place on Nov. 11, 2007.
The water that normally flows beneath the bridge and fills the ponds has been drained temporarily, because of pollution. A major cause is the overpopulation of birds.
Signs around the park ask patrons not to feed the many species of birds, for reasons including that their bodies are not made to ingest bread and that teaching them to rely on people for their food disrupts the natural habitat and increases the amount of bird waste in the water.
