San Jose Airport Summer Travel Numbers Taking Off

Airport officials reported a significant increase in summer flights this year.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — Mineta San Jose International Airport announced Friday that it served 16.4 percent more passengers during the peak summer travel months of June, July and August compared to 2016. The airport announced the statistic in a news release, which said the increased growth over the months pushed the airport towards a mark of serving 12 million passengers on a rolling 12-month basis.

"We had incredible growth in June, July and August as Silicon Valley travelers chose SJC's many nonstop flights for their summer getaways, whether for business or leisure," said Director of Aviation John Aitken in a statement. "We are fast approaching serving 12 million passengers per year, and are continuing to expand and improve our facilities and services to meet this customer demand."

The airport credits the growth to the addition of new flights. As of the end of August 2017, the airport has served 11.9 million people in the last 12 months. The biggest growth was in August, which was a 19.2 percent increase over the previous year.
