Reader Writes: Santa Clara County to propose Homeless Shelter in Sunnyvale Neighborhood

Community resident shares his opinion and thoughts: "Residents Outraged once again."

There is an obvious pattern here in Sunnyvale as Officials ignore residents of Victory Village by once again neglecting to notify them at all of a planned project that will greatly affect the neighborhood in which they live. Previously, PG&E had plans to remove all trees and vegetation along East California Avenue .

This time residents are outraged that Santa Clara County has proposed a Temporary Homeless Shelter capable of housing 125 people for the Winter months. While knowing of this for months in advance, the residents of Victory Village have once again been told nothing by Sunnyvale Officials as if their neighborhood does not exist and their lives do not matter. The Shelter is to be constructed on County property which borders a busy expressway on one side with an entrance ramp to that expressway on the other. This plot of County property lays adjacent to East California Avenue which is an entrance way to Victory Village.

The County has said that the Shelter will be open to the Homeless during the evening hours thru to the morning when the residents will be asked to leave each day. Until they can return that evening they will make use of a children’s park located in Victory Village and most likely set up tents through-out the surrounding area .

Thus, turning the entire area into a homeless camp as was done to the Fair Oaks Park area when the doors were shut to the Armory Shelter not to long ago. That also was a temporary shelter lasting 22 years.

Seems as if Sunnyvale Officials have planned to designate a portion of their Charter City for charitable use for the homeless. With Sunnyvale’s help and government funding the County of Santa Clara can take pride in down grading the value of real estate in Victory Village. A once historical and integral part of Sunnyvale history.
