SOFTBALL: Milpitas Outlasts Lynbrook

Trojans win slugfest on Senior Day at Milpitas High.

The Score: Milpitas 10, Lynbrook 6

The Star: Milpitas Junior Sydnie Turner provided the answers for the Trojans going 3-for-4 with a key two-run double in the bottom of the fifth to give Milpitas the lead and the eventual win against league opponent Lynbrook at Milpitas High Friday afternoon.

Milpitas capped the win off with its ceremonial presentation honoring the team’s three seniors. The Senior Day ceremony celebrated the achievements of Kelsey Wilson, Clarisse Rivera, and Crystal Antonelli.

The Turning Point: With Milpitas (10-11, 6-4 ECL) in control 5-0 heading into the top of the third, Lynbrook (4-12-1, 3-8 ECL) roared back with five runs of it’s own to even things up. Led by Lynbrook senior Stephanie Wolf, who drilled a two-run looping single into the left field gap to tie the game at 5-5, the Vikings turned this El Camino division affair into a wild one. Prior to the hit, Wolf was struck by a pitch but was not awarded first base. The umpire ruled that the hitter didn’t make enough of an effort to move away from the incoming pitch striking the ire of the Lynbrook dugout.

The tie was short lived as the Trojans took charge in the bottom of the fifth with a four-run inning led by Turner ,who knocked a two run double to left field to give the Trojans the extra insurance needed to fend off the visitors.

The Quotes: “It was nice to see the kids battle back,” said Lynbrook head coach Stacey Benzing on her team’s five-run rally to tie things up against Milpitas.

With Lynbrook losing a whopping 10 seniors to graduation this year, Coach Benzing is hopeful for next year.

“I think we’ll have a good season next year as we have our whole infield returning—it should be interesting,” Benzing said.

The Trojans offense came through with some big hits to outlast Lynbrook on Friday.

“It was a good game for us especially our last (game) at home this season and especially for our seniors,” said Milpitas’ Turner on today’s win against Lynbrook.

What’s Next? Milpitas finishes it’s season on the road with two games remaining as they face first place Monte Vista on Monday (5/09) while Lynbrook plays it’s final game of the season on the road as well on Wednesday (5/11) against Los Altos.

The Bottom Line: Despite Milpitas departing three seniors to college, they will be a team to watch next year in El Camino play with their full arsenal still in tact led by Sydnie Turner, Tiana Teixeira, and Kiana Aguilar.
