Sunnyvale Names Interim City Manager

City Manager Deanna Santana is leaving for Santa Clara.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — The city of Sunnyvale has appointed an interim city manager to replace outgoing City Manager Deanna Santana. Current Assistant City Manager Kent Steffens will fill the void left by Santana after her final day on Oct. 1, the city announced on Friday. Sunnyvale city spokesperson Jennifer Garnett said Santana is leaving to be the city manager for Santa Clara.

According to the city, Steffens has more than 30 years of experience at public agencies, including with the cities of Sunnyvale, Menlo Park, Palo Alto and Foster City.

Steffens joined the city in 2011 as director of public works, overseeing the city's capital improvement program, real estate services, transportation planning and the maintenance of other city services. He was promoted to assistant city manager in 2014.

In the past, he's served as an interim city manager, assistant city manager, worked as a senior engineer for a Bay Area utility district and worked as a civilian construction manager for the U.S. Navy at the Naval Facilities Engineering Command in San Bruno.

The city will hire a recruiting firm to start a nationwide search for a permanent city manager and will conduct interviews in November and December.

Individuals who want to apply to serve on an interview panel for the new city manager can find applications online at Sunnyvale.ca.gov by early October.
