At What Age Should Orthodontic Treatments Start?

According to the American Academy of Orthodontists, children should have a complete orthodontic evaluation by the time they are 7 years old. At the age of 7, children can vary drastically in tooth and jaw development. Yet, due to the fact that the jaw is still growing and developing during childhood, we can determine the potential for certain problems ahead of time and create a treatment plan to reduce the risk. Early orthodontic treatments tend to be focused more on guiding the growth of the jaw and reducing the need for later treatment, than on straightening teeth. They are usually used in conjunction with other treatments, also.

Many problems are easier to treat when addressed early. For example, we can use palatal expanders to correct crossbites, devices to prevent tongue thrusting or thumb sucking, and other corrective treatments to improve spacing. Early evaluation does not always mean treatment must start immediately. However, it can be a great way to identify the need for early interventions or treatments, while addressing issues that can lead to other problems. Most children will begin active treatment with braces or other treatments between the ages of 9 and 14.

While early orthodontics is a great option for children, many people do not get the treatment that they need until later in life. We have an orthodontic solution for people of all ages and can help you find the best option for your smile.
