Thousands joined a protest and march against police violence in Danville Sunday, where attendees silently took a knee on the Town Green.

DANVILLE, CA — About 2,000 people turned out to a protest and march in downtown Danville Sunday, the latest in a wave of demonstrations against racism and police violence that have swept cities across the country following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

The march began at the Town Green before heading south to the intersection of San Ramon Valley Boulevard and the Town and Country Shopping Center, Danville Police Chief Allan Shields told Patch. Marchers then headed back north before concluding again at the Town Green.

There, the crowd took a knee in silence, Cathy Burkholder, executive pastor at the Community Presbyterian Church in Danville, told Patch.

"The Danville Police were assisted by officers from the California Highway Patrol and were there to protect the rights of the protesters and to make sure the roadways were safe while the protest took place," Shields said.

"I would like to thank the protesters and the organizers for taking great care to conduct a peaceful protest."
