Pearl Harbor Survivor To Join Danville 9/11 Remembrance

One of the last 10 living Pearl Harbor survivors will join military speakers and Gold Star families to commemorate the 25th anniversary.

DANVILLE, CA — The Exchange Club of the San Ramon Valley is sponsoring a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony Friday from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. at Oak Hill Park in Danville.

The ceremony will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the attacks in New York City, Washington, and Pennsylvania. Chuck Kohler, one of ten living survivors of the Pearl Harbor attacks, will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. The keynote address will be given by retired U.S. Marine Col. Chris Starling, who served 26 years in the infantry, including as commanding officer of his Battalion Landing Team in the Persian Gulf.

The ceremony will also feature remarks by Roxanne Langevin, who will honor her son and other military families who lost members serving their country. It will also feature participation from the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District and Danville police, an honor guard, the Monte Vista High School choir, a bagpiper and bugler, and young people carrying 50 American flags.

After the ceremony, guests can enjoy free ice cream treats and awards given to student essays about 9/11. Awards will be given for first, second, and third place for high school, middle school, and elementary school.

On Friday morning, Alameda County Supervisor David Haubert and the Alameda County Fire Department will host a ceremony at the Alameda County Fairgrounds Amphitheater. The ceremony will feature speakers personally affected by 9/11, a presentation of colors, the singing of the national anthem, Call of the Bell, rifle salute, and Taps. See here to RSVP by Thursday.

The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department is also hosting a ceremony at 9:45 a.m. Friday at Fire Station #1 at 3560 Nevada Street in Pleasanton. Coffee and donuts will be available following the ceremony.
