WATCH: Injured, Stranded Hiker Rescued From Mt. Diablo

DANVILLE, CA — Emergency crews rescued an injured hiker stranded on Mount Diablo Saturday, the East Bay Regional Parks Department reported.

The seriously injured hiker became stranded on extremely steep, inaccessible terrain located by Fossil Ridge and the Summit Trail, according to EBRPD spokesperson Jen Vanya. Crews piloting an EAGLE 8 helicopter, a Rescue Line technician, and other public safety partners were able to execute a complex helicopter rescue, which safely extracted the patient and transported them to medical care. The hiker sustained a severe leg injury, according to Vanya.

Video footage posted by EBRPD shows crews securing the hiker to a rope, which hoisted the hiker into the sky and into the helicopter above.

Mt. Diablo has seen numerous rescues in recent years. In November 2025, an injured 12-year-old horseback rider was airlifted to safety after falling off her horse in a remote area on the north side of Mt. Diablo. In May 2023, a hiker fell approximately 100 feet near Devils Pulpit Sunday afternoon. The crews were able to access the hiker in a difficult-to-access location. They were eventually able to place the injured hiker into a rescue harness, and lower her into a REACH helicopter. In August 2022, crews worked together to lower an injured 19-year-old hiker into a helicopter after she fell 30-60 feet.

If you find yourself in an emergency while hiking, the following precautions may help:

• Call 911, and try to use satellite assist by pointing the phone toward the sky if you have limited service.
• Bring a dedicated satellite messenger or personal locator beacon.
• Move to higher or more open ground if possible.
• Bring a whistle or signaling device. Three blasts is the customary distress signal.
• Stay near the trail and make yourself visible.
• Tell a trusted friend or family member your exact route, and when to call authorities if you haven't returned.
