Educators to Call for Higher Wages at Rally Outside School District

Hundreds of East Bay educators are expected to make calls for higher wages at a protest in Danville this evening, according to a union representing San Ramon Valley Unified School District workers. The San Ramon Valley Education Association is asking for a 6 percent ongoing salary increase and 2 percent one-time bonus from the district.

The district, comprised of 35 schools in Danville, San Ramon, Alamo and other nearby areas, has apparently offered the 2 percent one-time bonus but a percent less for the ongoing salary increase, according to union officials. District officials were not immediately available to comment on the negotiations. Union officials said teachers might have to leave the district because of rising costs of living in the East Bay.

“Our district needs to be ready for the impending teacher shortage by offering adequate compensation that allows it to recruit and retain teachers,” union president Ann Katzburg said in a statement.

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District has not yet been reached for comment.

The union is organizing a rally with its membership at the district’s offices at 699 Old Orchard Drive at 5 p.m. Educators will then pack the 7 p.m. school board meeting at the same location.
