DANVILLE, CA — Elephants are known for their large size, but who knew one of them has a trunk that’s 100 light years long?

Patch’s resident astronomer Bob Schiff shared a mind boggling image of the Elephant’s Trunk Nebula, so-named because of its resemblance to an elephant’s trunk.

“The image shows the nebula in three colors emitted by the hydrogen, sulfur and oxygen gases ionized by very young hot stars,” Schiff explained. “This particular color scheme is referred to as the Hubble palette, a narrowband image processing technique developed by scientists working on photographs taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. It's so cool that the beauty of the Universe can be discovered right from our own backyards.”
