Free 'Discover Diablo' Hiking Series Kicks Off

See everything from wildflowers to tarantulas on more than 20 free, guided public hikes and walks organized by Save Mount Diablo.

MOUNT DIABLO, CA — A series of free, guided hikes, walks and tours around Mount Diablo will be open to the public throughout 2020, thanks to nonprofit conservation group Save Mount Diablo, the organization announced.

Hikers are scheduled to visit fields of wildflowers, creeks, tarantula territory, farm animals, oak forests and more through the Discover Diablo tour, according to the online itinerary. Participants will learn about medicinal herbs, wildlife and more.

"Through this free public hikes program, we aim to reach new audiences, grow our membership base, and spark a passion for Diablo’s wild, natural lands in the youngest of trailblazers," Save Mount Diablo said on its site.

Save Mount Diablo advocates for the preservation of the remaining, privately owned 60,000 acres of Mount Diablo, the group says on its website.

Hikers can expect to traverse up trails as high as 1,000 feet and as low as 50 feet, according to the itinerary. Hikes range from easy to strenuous and are free, though some parks have an entrance fee that must be paid.
