UPDATE: Gas Leak That Alamo Prompted Elementary School to Shelter in Place Capped, Students Released

Repairs to a gas leak in Alamo this morning that prompted a nearby elementary school to release students earlier than scheduled is expected to be completed later this evening, utility and school officials said. A third-party crew struck a 4-inch natural gas line at Wilson and Livorna roads and the leak was reported around 9:10 a.m., PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said.

The line was 4 feet below the surface but PG&E crews had to dig 5 feet into the ground to pinch the line, Sarkissian said. The flow of gas was stopped at 12:23 p.m. and repairs are estimated to be complete sometime after 5 p.m., she said.

Alamo Elementary School, north of the intersection, sheltered in place as a precaution at about 9:15 a.m., San Ramon Valley Unified School District spokeswoman Elizabeth Graswich said. The campus serves about 320 students in Kindergarten through fifth grade, Graswich said. A kindergarten class was scheduled to be dismissed at 11:40 a.m. and the remaining students were released around 12:30 p.m. instead of the regular Wednesday dismissal time of 1:40 p.m., according to Graswich. Parents and guardians were being advised to pickup their students at Dapplegray Lane, a street north of the campus, Graswich said. Children who cannot be picked up were kept in the school’s multipurpose room, Graswich said.

Residents of three homes near the scene of the leak were asked to evacuate but have now been allowed back inside, San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District spokesman David Stevens said. Livorna Road was closed in both directions at Wilson Road and all lanes reopened at about 1:30 p.m., Stevens said.

Anyone planning to perform any digging project is advised to call 811 so that PG&E can pinpoint where lines are in the area to prevent accidents from happening, Sarkissian said.
