Greetings and thanks for checking out my new blog, Nutrition Nuggets. First I’d like to answer a few questions;
Who am I? I’m a 49 year old resident of Danville. I’ve been a journalist for over 26 years and was recently certified as a nutrition consultant through Bauman College based in Berkeley. I’m married with two sons in college and my new passion is healthy homemade cooking and learning all I can about plant-based nutrition.
Why nutrition? I’ve been blessed with good health though I’ve struggled with my weight over the years. So I’ve always been interested in healthy eating and fitness but I got really hooked 5 years ago when I read a book called “Eat to Live” by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. It was the first time someone explained not just WHAT to eat (more vegetables, fresh fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds) but WHY we need to eat this way. That started a journey of exploring and reading anything I could get my hands on regarding the subject. Eventually I wanted to be more than just well-read on the topic. I wanted to get a formal education so I took an intensive 2-year on-line course through Bauman College. Since then, I’ve taught a series of classes on the topic, worked with a number of clients and offered community cooking sessions.
What’s this blog’s focus? My goal for this blog is to provide timely facts on good health and nutrition in a manner that’s easy to understand and applicable to our busy lives. I still read a variety of sources on nutrition studies. And with my journalism background, I place a big emphasis on accurate, sourced information, not here-say or social media rumors. I plan to also share recipes that I’ve sampled personally with a focus on seasonal produce that offers the maximum amount of nutrients and taste.
Am I promoting vegan eating? While I choose to follow a mostly vegan diet made of low-fat plant-based whole foods, I have no intention of trying to push a strict vegan-only agenda. This blog is simply meant to explain why we should be eating MORE fresh vegetables, fruit, whole grains and legumes. If you choose to still eat meat, fish, dairy and eggs, that’s fine. I prefer to think that I’m not anti-meat, I’m just pro-vegetable.
One final note; I’m a nutrition consultant. I’m not a doctor or nurse and none of my writings are intended to diagnose a condition or offer medical advice.
I welcome any and all feed-back, including questions, since this is a complex topic and highly subject to individual tastes and reactions.
