Over 200 Bills Signed By Gov. Newsom This Week: Headline Makers
New laws include medical marijuana at K-12 public schools, abortion services on college campuses, rent control and gun violence prevention.

SACRAMENTO, CA — More than 200 bills were signed into law this week by Governor Gavin Newsom, including 15 aimed at gun violence prevention. Here are just some of the other bills signed this week in California that made headlines:
Medical marijuana at K-12 public schools (allows school districts to adopt medicinal cannabis policies so parents and guardians can give their kids the drug on school campuses). SB 223
Cap on rent hikes — 5 percent annually — establishes rent control in California. AB 1482

Abortion-by-medication services at University of California and Cal State campuses (mandates that all campuses in these two systems offer this abortion service). The law takes effect January 1, 2023. SB 24
Phasing out of private, for-profit prisons in California (could eventually rid the state of for-profit lockups). AB 32

Prohibit hotels from providing small plastic bottles containing personal care products (no more free shampoo, at least not in a little plastic bottle!). The law takes effect January 1, 2023 for lodging establishments with more than 50 rooms, and January 1, 2024 for those with 50 rooms or less. AB 1162
Allow people to board public transit with their pets in areas under evacuation order. SB 397
Eighteen new bills were signed to jumpstart housing production in the state.
