SRVUSD Superintendent Finalist Runs Canada's Biggest District

San Ramon Valley Unified School District has tapped John Malloy, who currently oversees 247,000 students and 583 schools in Toronto.

SAN RAMON VALLEY, CA — San Ramon Valley Unified School District has chosen a finalist in its search to replace Superintendent Rick Schmitt: John Malloy, who is head of the Toronto District School Board in Canada.

Since 2016 Malloy has overseen the largest district in Canada, which serves more than 247,000 students across 583 schools in Toronto, according to a statement from SRVUSD. He holds a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Dayon, a masters degree in guidance counseling from Xavier University, a masters in theological studies from the University of St. Michael's College and a doctorate of education from the University of Toronto.

As SRVUSD superintendent, Malloy will serve at the helm of 36 K-12 schools in Alamo, Danville and San Ramon and oversee 31,000 students.

“I was drawn to the SRVUSD because it was clear to me that in the SRVUSD, you put students first," Malloy said in the written statement. "I look forward to partnering and collaborating with all stakeholders as we work together to face the challenges and embrace the successes that are sure to come our way.”

He began his teaching career at Moeller High School in Cincinnati, then took jobs as a teacher, guidance counselor and vice principal in the Toronto Catholic District School Board. He went on to serve as superintendent for the Durham Catholic District School Board and York Region District School Board, then oversaw the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.

"Dr. Malloy quickly emerged as an outstanding candidate whose vast experience and strong leadership abilities will greatly benefit the students, families and employees of the SRVUSD, as we navigate a new path forward in education during these uncertain times," said SRVUSD Board President Greg Marvel.

Malloy's job offer is expected to be confirmed at an upcoming SRVUSD board meeting.

Current superintendent Schmitt announced last month plans to retire after a 40-year career spent in California schools.

Schmitt said in a letter to the schools community that his time at SRVUSD was "an exceptional capstone" to his career.

"I am most grateful for the personal and professional relationships that I have been able to form with district managers, teachers, classified staff, the Board of Education, parents and community leaders," he said in the release. "Together we have been able to lead an already excellent school district to greater heights through some of the most trying times imaginable."
