Officials with the Contra Costa Area Office of the California Highway Patrol are saying thank you to some of the county’s unsung heroes. These heroes are the 18 seniors who make up the office’s senior volunteer program. The seniors keep children safe around school zones by being visually present.

They help teach traffic safety programs, help maintain patrol vehicles, keep critical equipment operating and process essential paperwork, among other tasks, officials said. Officials said the seniors do not ask for praise but find their reward knowing they are making a difference in others lives.

“They just motivate everyone around them,” CHP Officer John Fransen said. Fransen coordinates the program. Last year the group volunteered more than 7,000 hours of time, which is equivalent to more than three full-time employees. “This group’s phenomenal,” Fransen said. He added this isn’t the first time the group has volunteered 7,000 hours.
