24th Annual UC Davis Horse Production Sale

Department of Animal Science Foal Auction to Benefit Equine Management Program

The 24th Annual Horse Production Sale at the University of California, Davis is happening on Saturday, June 18th beginning with the preview of the foals at 3:30pm, a BBQ dinner available for purchase at 4:30pm and the auction will begin at 6pm. The annual event will be showcasing 11 horses and 2 mules – all bred, raised and trained by the Animal Science Students.

The auction will feature ten yearlings, one riding gelding, one broodmare, and one weanling. The breeds vary from Quarter Horse to Andalusian Cross to a Quarter Horse Molly Mule; a breed for every type of horse person out there! All of the horses are from champion bloodlines and have impeccable training and handling abilities. Foals have been exposed to a variety of activities including large crowds, heavy equipment and the show ring.

Proceeds from the sale support the Animal Science Department’s Equine Management Program. This program provides hands-on experience for students preparing for careers in horse industry or for further studies in veterinary medicine. Part of the Animal Science Foal Management Internship is learning how to handle and train weanlings and yearlings, as well as provide care for mares and foals before and after birth. Students are also responsible for fitting the horses for the sale and ensuring all foals can stand tied, load into a trailer, stand for the farrier, be clipped and work on a hot-walker.
