Bat Talk and Walk 2016

The Yolo Causeway and Bypass is a home for bats, thousands of them, and the bats eat the insects. Join a tour to learn all about them.

Bats are all around us eating the insects that bug us but rarely do we get a chance to see them. Join the Yolo Basin Foundation for an evening this summer to learn all about the bats and to watch them fly from under the causeway. An estimated 250,000 Mexican free-tailed bats live under the Yolo Causeway during the summer. It is one of the largest urban bat colonies in CA.

Hungry mother bats migrate to the CA Central Valley to spend the summer consuming agricultural pests. It is a maternity colony where the mothers give birth to a single pup and nurses it until it is weaned. As voraciously hungry mothers, these bats consume about one and one half tons of insects nightly all summer long. Learn more about these magnificent bats that share the city with us. These amazing mammals are often misunderstood and overlooked. Learn about the fascinating world of bats with the Yolo Basin Foundation at one of the popular summer Bat Talk and Walk events.

This event will feature live bats.

We begin with a 45-minute indoor presentation about bats followed by the opportunity to view live species native to CA. This is a chance to see their amazing adaptations up close.

Finally, the group will caravan through the Yolo Bypass Wildlife wetlands and rice fields to an area not open to the public to the viewing location to watch the “flyout” of one of the largest colonies of Mexican free-tailed bats in California. The bats emerge in long ribbons as they head out to hunt for insects for the night. Watching a bat emergence is a memorable and exciting experience. The colony forms a ribbon winding into the sky as the bats head out to forage for moths, mosquitoes, beetles and other insects. Guests will enjoy an amazing view of the bats’ dusk emergence from the Yolo Causeway. Along the way, enjoy wetland birds and plants as well as agricultural rice fields.
