Blog: Morale In the Work Place
How long did it take for Sam Walton's kids to make the decision to buy products made in China. Investment firms killed businesses in America.
When I first got into management in the early 80s, restaurant managers were awarded bonuses based on hard work. They received a percentage of the profit.
In the 90s, that changed. If a manager got a bonus, it was more a matter of hitting the numbers just right. They had to hit those numbers in order to make a bonus.
What I learned from the change in the bonus structure is this: In the past, if a manager did their best and made a profit, they got a bonus check in return. The restaurant industry's bonus incentive in the 90s became more about avoiding complaints and meeting requirements. For example: It would start out at $10,000 and it would drop from there based on what goals were met.

We can rebuild America by bringing back the old bonus structure. It would be simple: If a manager fails to build sales or make a profit three months in a row, they are demoted or fired.
