Looking for a Sandwich? Zia's Delicatessen is the Place to Go

Summer will come to a close soon, much to my disappointment.  One would think that would give me a multitude of time to explore Davis a little more.  

Quite the contrary, I had a busy summer. After I finished my finals in early June, I spent a couple of weeks recuperating from school before I spent the next two months driving back and forth to Sacramento for an internship. I
apologize for the delay on the latest blog post.

With that being said, I want to say to those who haven’t tried : You're missing out.

I went there this summer with a friend who also attends UC Davis.  Whenever we eat in Davis, we go to restaurants that one or both of us haven’t tried before.  She recommended Zia’s one weekend based off good reviews she had heard. I had never been before, either. So off to Zia’s we went.

Zia’s is in a small space on 3^rd Street in Downtown Davis, but boy were we lucky to find any room to stand.  There was a long line that snaked around the
store.  I’m sure the only reason it didn’t extend out the door was to avoid the summer heat.   Even though the employees were busy, they were very friendly. 

It must have been frustrating for the guy writing my order, taking the time to recite the list of cheeses they offer before I decided on cheddar, but he was very polite about it. 

They have a variety of beverages for sale.  I noticed that they sell Coca-Cola in a bottle. In my humble opinion, there are few things better in life than cold Coke straight from a glass bottle. 

I fought the urge to do a tap dance on the counter as my friend and I grabbed our own Coca-Cola bottles and paid. They even have an old-fashioned bottle opener attached the side of their counter, where one has to hook the lid under the opener and use every ounce of strength to push the bottle down to open.  It was worth it.

My tri-tip sandwich was quite delicious.  My friend enjoyed her sandwich as well.  It was a great lunch, lounging outside under the shade with our sandwiches and Coke.

Looking back now, I have only one nitpick.  My friend and I had struggled to look at the menu, beyond the sausage links dangling from the ceiling.  But maybe it’s easier each time you go in, once you have an idea of what you want already.

Grab lunch at Zia’s whether or not you’ve been.  Perhaps go on at an off hour on a weekday when there’s less of a chance it’ll be busy. Then again, based on Zia’s popularity, that's probably like trying to avoid crowds at Disneyland. 

But for a great sandwich and friendly service, I’ll take the long line without complaint.
