Pancakes & Politics - Saturday at 10 a.m.

Gather at Cornucopia COOP for Pancakes -- and talk about the election -- every candidate, every issue -- so you are fully informed with multiple brains! Saturday -- 10am Pancakes; 11am-2pm Politics.

Politics and Pancakes is about Pancakes, Community & Politics.  We'll discuss propositions and candidates on the upcoming ballot so that we may vote smarter than our dumb neighbor.

Please FORWARD this to all Davis Community Email List Servers for WIDE DISTRIBUTION.

PANCAKES & POLITICS is also sometimes known as BALLOTS AND BURRITOS or EGGS & ELECTIONS).   It's a great chance to meet other local people who care about politics and the world we're living in.  WHY IT"S GREAT: You'll be in the know about all those weird little offices and issues you never have time to research.

HOW THE PANCAKE PART WORKS:  We need a few Volunteers to cook pancakes.  It's a Pancake Potluck of sorts.  Brings your favorite pancake mix (grandma's secret recipe?), syrup, ingredient or topping.  Nuts, berries, fruits, whipped cream, exotic extras of any sort.  Keep it vegetarian, and consider the vegans and others with special dietary needs.  Juices, coffee beans and complementary side-dishes also welcome.  Come in the 10:00am hour so we can start the politics part on time!

HOW THE POLITICS PART WORKS:  Each person attending is responsible to research one ballot initiative, or candidates for one office (until we have one for each, you can still come if you didn't sign up).  They (meaning ...  perhaps....you!) will prepare a verbal 3-5 minute 'summary' to share --  arguments on each side of the issue, who the candidates are and what they have to say.  After presenting both sides, tell us which way you're leaning and why.  Then the group has about four to six and-a-half minutes to discusses the issue/office and present their views.

=============================================

Quick Do you know how are you voting on the 11 state propositions?  We didn't think so.  Come to P&P and be able to answer "Yes" by 2:00pm Saturday!

=============================================

HOW TO PICK or BE ASSIGNED an ISSUE or OFFICE:

There are three (3) Federal Offices, two (2) State Offices, one (1) Local (school, Office, eleven (11) State Propositions, and two (2) Local Measures

For a list of these on which to SIGN UP for one, go to the Google Doc:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhcADRCMQwmldEdqYWkwTGpXa2F...

Anyone can edit the Google Doc to sign up, or for help or to get a random issue/office contact:

Nikhil: <sandman_artlover@yahoo.com>  and/or  (530) 867-3694

If you want to be assigned or have knowledge of a particular issue or office, its first ask, first served.  We ask that folks volunteer to research some of the "unknown" issues or offices as our goal is to have all informed about all issues.  The minor issues are the ones oft forgotten -- and that's P&P's strength.

WHAT TO DO for YOUR RESEARCH:  Do some research (resources below) on both sides of the issue (or for each candidate), discuss the positions of the candidate, pros and cons of props, who's for and against, what you think, and any other little juicy, gossipy tidbits we should know.  A list of several helpful websites with candidate/issue information can be found towards the bottom of this email.

IF YOU AREN'T RESEARCHING but would like to MAKE THE WORLD BETTER THROUGH VOLUNTEERISM:  We have other things that you could do to help out with such as  timekeeping, setting up, cleaning afterward, writing a summary 'voter guide' for distribution,coming early to cook pancakes etc.   If you would like to volunteer to help out, please contact.

<mindx@omsoft.com

IF YOU ARE NOT VOLUNTEERING:  You are still welcome to join us.

RESPECT:  This has traditionally been a meeting of 'progressively-minded' souls, but not exclusively.  Please be respectful of those with differing views and make them feel welcome.  We often learn more from those who disagree with our views than those that agree.

SCRIBES / VOTER GUIDE ???:  We have in the past had scribes who took notes on the proceedings and in some cases made up a quirky "voter guide" that was printed and/or put on the web.  If anyone is so-inclined so we may influence/educate more peoples, please feel free to volunteer!

LARGE COFFEE MAKER ???:  If someone has a large coffee maker that they would be willing to use to make some brew, it will go far  ...

RESTROOMS:  In house.

ORGANIZED THIS TIME BY:  Alan C. MIller & Nikhil Joshi.  We'd like to thank The Cornucopia COOP and the inhabitants for use of the house, restrooms & kitchen.

HELPFUL WEBSITES to research issues & candidates.  You are also welcome to get creative, use your own knowledge, or make stuff up (well, you might get challenged!).
