California DMV Launches Credit-Card Payment Pilot Program

The DMV office in Davis is the first to offer the payment option. By early 2020, DMV expects all offices to accept credit cards — at a fee.

DMV customers will be charged a 2.3-percent service fee when using credit cards at a DMV field office and 2.1-percent when paying with a card online, by phone or at a kiosk.

DAVIS, CA — Starting Monday, Sept. 30, the Davis DMV Office will be the first in the state of California to accept credit cards as a form of payment, the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced in a news release Wednesday.

The DMV is piloting the new payment option at the Davis field office, 505 Pole Line Road, with additional DMV offices in Fresno, Victorville and Roseville joining the pilot in the coming weeks.

The pilot program follows recommendations made by Gov. Gavin Newsom's Strike Team, according to DMV public affairs representatives.

"This credit-card option is one more way we are improving the customer experience at the DMV," said DMV Director Steve Gordon.

DMV expects the credit-card option to be fully implemented as a form of payment at all field offices by early 2020.

In alignment with how other state departments process credit- and debit-card transactions, DMV customers will be charged a 2.3-percent service fee when using credit or debit cards at a DMV field office.

DMV officials noted that while accepting credit cards is a new payment option offered at field offices, the DMV has been allowing customers to use credit and debit cards to complete transactions online, by phone and at DMV Now kiosks.

That will change beginning Sunday, Sept. 29, when credit-and debit-card payments made online, by phone or at a kiosk will be charged a service fee of 2.1 percent.

DMV customers who pay via cash, check or money order will not be charged a service fee.
