The City of Davis announced today that with fall just around the corner, the City of Davis and Recology Davis are gearing up for the fall/winter, on-street yard material pile collection season. This year, collection will begin the week of Oct. 18 and will continue every other week until the end of February.

The first week of the collection season is always a busy one, so to make sure yard material pile collection runs smoothly this season, customers are asked to:
• Check the pile size. “The Claw” that Recology uses to collect piles is not able to pick piles that are larger than five feet in any direction. Cut branches up into pieces five feet or less and break large piles into several smaller-sized piles. The City will endeavor to place tags on piles that are observed as being oversized so that customers will have time to correct the problem and have their pile pick-up on schedule.
• Fill the organics cart first. Pile collection is only for materials that do not fit in the organics cart. Always fill the organics carts up with yard materials before placing materials in the street for collection.
• Keep bike lanes clear. Yard material piles should never be placed in any portion of a bike lane.

The organics carts provided by Recology allow for weekly collection of yard materials for City of Davis customers and have the added benefit of contributing to rich compost that can be used by County residents in their landscaping and gardens. Organics carts, aside from being the primary method of managing yard materials, also handle food scraps, paper towels and other compostable wastes. Small items like grass clippings and pulled weeds should only be placed in organics carts and should not be placed in street piles.
Since the yard material pile collection season is less than a month away from starting, the City would like to remind customers with on-street yard material pile collection service that it’s still too early to place out piles in the street. Piles may only be placed out in the street up to seven days before a scheduled collection.
Piles may not be set out in the street until the week of Oct. 12. The City does actively enforce the yard material rules, and piles that are placed out too early can receive a violation notice.
Yard material pile timing is important in order to keep our streets clean and clear of debris for unnecessarily long periods. Additionally, Recology is scheduled to sweep streets the week of Oct. 3 and if piles are placed in the street too early, Recology cannot access the gutter and sweep accumulated debris.
