Mailbox break-ins have increased. Here's how to avoid being a victim.

Unfortunately, Davis is not immune to a crime that’s increasing elsewhere.
The Davis Police Department and the United States Postal Inspector Service report an increase in community mailbox break-ins this year.
Several community mailboxes have been vandalized or broken into, which may have led to mail theft. Besides the immediate loss, this type of theft can lead to identity theft because account numbers, social security numbers and other important information may be compromised.

The Davis Police Department offers these 4 tips to avoid becoming a victim:
- Deposit outgoing mail in a blue mail collection box, at a Post Office, or hand it directly to your mail carrier.
- Never leave mail in your mailbox overnight. That is the most common time for thieves to attack.
- If you see a mail theft in progress, or suspicious activity around your mail box, call the Davis Police Dispatch at the number below.
- Establish a Neighborhood Liaison Program with the Police Department.
