Devils Lake & the Black Hills: Photographs by Mark Lanning Jr.

Mark Lanning’s exhibit places two bodies of recent photographic series side by side, one shot on location in Devils Lake and Williston, North Dakota, the other centered in South Dakota’s Black Hills region. Lanning’s immersion in the careful recording of the environmental crises and cultural shifts in the Dakotas shows a region struggling with the effects of the ongoing shale oil boom and the contested history of the Black Hills.

Artist Talk: Friday, Oct. 16, 7-8 pm(free)

Mark Lanning will discuss his experience as a photographer documenting the personal and cultural histories of residents and migrants in both North and South Dakota. Lanning will also sign copies of his handmade books on each series.
