Dr. Tecoy Porter to Speak at MLK Celebration in Yolo County

Woodland, CA - Members of the community are invited to attend the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on January 19 at 4:30 p.m. Hosted by the Yolo County Office of Education, the virtual event will be held on Facebook Live and Zoom and celebrate the life and impact of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Local community leader Dr. Tecoy Porter will serve as the main speaker. Porter is senior pastor of the Genesis Church in South Sacramento, where he has served since 1999. Porter is currently a candidate for California’s Tenth State Assembly district.

Porter is a long-time community leader in the Sacramento region. Moved by the death of Stephon Clark in March 2018, Porter formed the Sacramento chapter of the National Action Network, a leading civil rights organization. He has also worked to advance state legislation supporting criminal justice reform and amending police use-of-force practices.

Porter and his family in Minneapolis were among the ministers who helped plan and coordinate George Floyd’s memorial service last year. He was also instrumental in opening an elementary school at his church through a partnership with Fortune School, a network of public charter schools with a mission to close the African American achievement gap.

The event will be emceed by County Superintendent Garth Lewis and will feature youth leaders from the Martin Luther King Freedom Center, an Oakland-based organization seeking to strengthen civic engagement.

There is no cost to attend the event. The webinar will be streamed on Facebook Live at facebook.com/YoloCOE. To participate via Zoom, attendees are asked to register in advance at yolocoe.k12oms.org/2495-213825.
