Keys had faced 25 years after being convicted.
Prosecutors convinced the jury that he had shared confidential information from the Times, where he worked, with the hacking group, Anonymous, which used the information to get on the Times website.
Keys's attorney had maintained that he should have never been charged under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act because while Keys had helped Anonymous hack the site, the damage was minor and short-lived.
The act requires damage of more than $5,000 be done for federal charges to be brought.
Anonymous had hacked into the L.A. Times and added obscenities to an article. They were quickly removed.
