Government Incentives for Solar
As of June 2013 the only incentive to go solar for most homeowners in Northern California is the 30% Federal Tax Credit. A Tax Credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in your federal tax liability. If you have already paid your taxes you are eligible for a tax refund at the end of the year, ASSUMING you have enough liability to begin with. If your tax liability is less than the Tax Credit you may carry the Credit forward until 2016, the year the Credit Expires.
Many homeowners are under the impression they are still eligible for state rebates. As of February 2013, PG&E has run out of solar rebates for residential homeowners. If you own a business you we can still apply on your behalf at least for another year when those too will run out. If you live in Southern California under the jurisdiction of SCE or SDG&E they still have rebates for residential as well as commercial.
If you are lucky enough to live under the purview of Sacramento Municipal Utility Division (SMUD) then yes you are still eligible for some rather generous rebates with your local utility company. Most smaller utility companies such as SMUD or Roseville Electric still offer solar rebates, in many cases far in excess of what PG&E has offered for several years.
