Old East Davis is Bike Fixie Country

The wide leafy streets of Old East Davis are home to an astonishing concentration of mainly mom-n-pop size and laid-back "Do It Yourself" and no-frills bike fixie shops.

In semi-hidden storefronts you'll find everything from informal "tool lenders" to full-service establishments and an interesting mix of repair/retail options in between.

This concentration may have something to do with the non- "Master-Planned" layout of the rustic neighborhood along with the somewhat cheaper rents.

Sheldon Blissett, proprietor, knows bikes. He was a breakneck bike courier in Washington, DC and a mountain biker who first got in the repair business as a way of defraying his rising repair expenses. He learned bike mechanics from the ground up, from two top-notch practitioners (one "by-the-book" the other who is a maestro of improvising) and opened Blisworks Bikes in Davis a year and a half ago. Here you can purchase rebuilt bikes (parts from the UCD bike auctions, junkyards and trade-ins among other sources) or brand-new and bring yours in for repair of just about anything that can possibly go wrong with a bike. The owner, Rich, is glad to talk bikes and fishing, which he does down in the Delta on his days off. (Check out his photos under the counter if you don't believe some of his fish stories.) Parts are cheap and quality is high, as is the workmanship of Rich and his partners.
