Woodland, CA - Resilient Yolo will continue its three-part virtual workshop series with a session focused on building resilience in education, with speakers from the Yolo County Office of Education, Woodland Joint Unified School District (WJUSD), and the California Department of Education (CDE).

The workshop, scheduled on January 7 at 12:00 p.m., will include a presentation from CDE on state-sponsored initiatives and projects related to mental health and social-emotional learning to help foster resilience in students. Dr. Thomas Herman, Education Administrator, and Monica Nepomuceno, Interim Education Administrator, will be the presenters for the session.

Educational leaders are seeking to minimize the impact of traumatic stress on children and youth. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that two of every three children in the U.S. experience a potentially traumatic event by the age of 16, such as community or school violence or neglect.

A third and final workshop is scheduled for March 4 and will focus on resilience in healthcare, with speakers to be announced.

Formed in 2014, Resilient Yolo is a community-based collaborative with an interest in strengthening the resilience of Yolo County by providing education about adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). In 1995, a study on ACEs identified a link between ACEs exposure and a higher likelihood of negative health and behavioral outcomes.

The collaborative plans to host its annual Building a Resilient Yolo Summit on May 12, 2022, at the Woodland Community and Senior Center. The summit gathers community members, service providers, educators, families, youth, and leaders from across Yolo County to strengthen ideas and strategies to build a more resilient community. Registration for the summit is not yet open.
