Stunning Star Trail, Comet Neowise: Davis Photos Of The Day

Take a closer look at two amazing images sent in by a UC Davis postdoctoral fellow.

DAVIS, CA — Sandipan Samaddar, a postdoctoral fellow at the Scow Lab, University of California, Davis, Department of Land Air & Water Resources, shared two amazing images: one is of Comet NEOWISE, the other is of a star trail. Below, he shares information about each photo.

Star Trail

"This star trail was clicked from the backyard of my house in West Davis. It was taken on April 2, 2020 on a quarter moon night when the sky was absolutely clear using Nikon D610 and a 24-120 mm mounted on a tripod. The final image was created by stitching 70 images together. Each image was taken at f/4, ISO 400 and had an exposure time of 30 secs. An inbuilt intervalometer was used to click 70 images with 6 secs interval between every two image. The total time taken to capture the image was 42 mins."

Neowise Comet

"Taken on July 16, 2020 from Davis (Intersection of County road 101A and 29). It was taken one hour after sunset looking at the northwestern sky. It appeared under the Big Dipper about 10 degrees above the horizon. The landscape picture was taken using a Nikon D610 with 24-120 mm lens at 24mm, f/4, ISO-500, 20 seconds. The picture in the inset was taken with 70-200mm lens at 200mm, f/2.8, ISO-1000,10 seconds."
