Suspected Drunk Crashes, Drives With Deployed Airbags: Police

The SUV went into a ditch, and the driver was arrested by the Davis Police Department.

DAVIS, CA – A motorist was arrested Monday night for suspected driving under the influence after the person's SUV, with front-end damage and deployed airbags, was spotted by officers near the intersection of Richards Boulevard and Olive Drive, police said.

Two Davis officers were patrolling the area about 11:30 p.m. when they heard "the distinct sounds of a traffic collision" coming from the underpass area, according to the Davis Police Department.

The police said they saw driving at them, on the wrong side of the road, a black SUV that had "front-end damage consistent with having been involved in a collision, its hood was tented up so the driver could barely see out the front windshield and the airbags had deployed inside."

The motorist drove south on Richards, went off the road and down a steep embankment into a ditch, the department said. The driver was evaluated and eventually arrested for suspicion of DUI.

"Thankfully there was not much traffic out when this happened, no one else was involved and there were no serious injuries," Davis PD said. "This serves as yet another reminder as to how dangerous driving under the influence can be."
