7-Year-Old Severely Injured When Mom Falls Asleep at the Wheel

A woman fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a tree near Torrey Pines, severely injuring her 7-year-old son, police said today.

The 39-year-old driver of a Honda Civic was headed west on Genesee Avenue near North Torrey Pines Road shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday when she fell asleep, veered off the roadway and crashed, San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros said.

The boy sustained serious but non-life-threatening internal injuries in the wreck, Delimitros said. The driver was not hurt.
