DEL MAR, CA — A young man who was fatally struck by a freight train while taking pictures or shooting video with his cellphone or some other type of mobile device in Del Mar was publicly identified today as a 19-year-old Poway resident.
Javad Hedayarzadeh was struck and killed by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train on the bluffs north of 13th Street Saturday night, according to sheriff's officials and the county Medical Examiner's Office.
The northbound freight train's conductor blasted the horn and turned on bright lights, but the victim and two companions did not move away from the tracks, according to a sheriff's department statement. Hedayarzadeh was "utilizing the camera on his mobile device" just before the train struck him at about 40 miles per hour, the statement said.
