Bikers Beware: Bicycle Thefts Nearly Triple in Del Mar
San Diego Sheriff's Department Captain Robert Haley said the increase in bicycle thefts in 2012 was responsible for almost one-third of the increased crime rate in Del Mar.

San Diego Sheriff's Department released some interesting numbers at Monday night's Del Mar City Council meeting. Captain Robert Haley said violent crimes increased 6.25 percent in 2012 from 2011, and theft of bicycles was the primary driving factor responsible for the increased crime rate. (Note: violent crime is defined as homicide, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, theft and auto theft reports.)
In 2011, 7 were stolen and in 2012, a total of 19 were stolen. Haley said the theft of bicycles was the specific property theft type that increased the most last year.
Be sure to lock up your bike at bike racks while stopping in Del Mar or at home.
