Prop J reduces Camino del Mar between 4th and 15th Street to One Lane

Will roundabouts and one lane on Camino del Mar work in Del Mar?

Prop J reduces Camino del Mar between 4th and 15th Streets to one Lane in each direction, with roundabouts at 9th, 11th and 13th Streets.  The stoplight at 15th St will remain.  The rationale for this change is that traffic will flow better and there will be wider sidewalks through Del Mar.

Yet this configuration is untested in any other part of the world as Del Mar is just one mile west of a freeway that clogs up each night south of Del Mar, the major employment center for the county of San Diego is just south of Del Mar (UTC, Sorrento Valley, UCSD and Torrey Pines Mesa), the Del Mar Fairgrounds attracts over 3 million visitors each year and the beach at Del Mar attracts over 1 million visitors each year.

Fortunately, for the citizens of Del Mar, on Sunday, October 7, the Del Mar Village Association hosted a Taste of Del Mar and Art Stroll.  For this event Camino del Mar was reduced from one lane from 11th to 15th street.  A picture of the traffic along Camino del Mar is displayed with this blog.  Some of the traffic diverted on to the residential streets east and west of Camino del Mar.
