Torrey Pines High School Will Host Cyclists Saturday for American Diabetes Association Fundraiser
Watch out for 900 cyclists at Torrey Pines HS on Saturday morning.

For the second consecutive year, Torrey Pines High School, 3710 Del Mar Heights Road, San Diego, will be the site for the start-and-finish line for the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) 2013 Tour de Cure, a cycling fundraiser this Saturday, April 20.
Motorists traveling in Carmel Valley, Rancho Santa Fe and near the high school on Del Mar Heights Road are advised to be on the lookout on Saturday morning for more than 900 people riding their bicycles on surface streets. Among the streets at the beginning of the Tour de Cure cycling route: El Camino Real, San Dieguito Road, Via de Santa Fe, El Montevideo, Via de Fortuna, El Mirlo and El Apajo.
Now in its 13th year in San Diego, the Tour de Cure features cyclists of all ages and skill levels riding. The seven-mile route loops on neighborhood streets surrounding the high school, including Torrington Street, Grayson Drive, Capstone Drive, Norcroff Road, High Bluff Drive, Overpark Drive, and Windbreak Road with a rest stop at Solana Highlands Elementary School on Long Run Drive. The longer rides are on streets throughout the North County in the communities of Elfin Forest, Escondido, San Marcos, Oceanside with returning through Leucadia, Encinitas, Cardiff, Solana Beach and Del Mar. Routes will include oceanfront sights as well as backcountry roads that are popular with cyclists. People who have diabetes will be recognized with a “Red Rider” jersey to wear on the day of the event. All cyclists will enjoy a barbecue lunch from Phil’s BBQ restaurant at the finish line.

On-site registration will start at 6 a.m. for the 75- and 100-mile rides, with the rides starting at 7 a.m. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. for the seven-, 30- and 50-mile rides, with the rides starting at 9:30 a.m. Registration fee is $25 per person with a $200 fundraising minimum.
Jim Duckworth, Tour de Cure event director, said the event is expected to raise more than $400,000 in donations for diabetes research and programs and services for people with diabetes.

“Our cyclists are among the most passionate people anywhere who care about cycling, health and, above all, finding a cure for diabetes,” said Duckworth. “Cyclists of all levels are sure to enjoy this unique day of fun, fitness, friendship and the personal satisfaction of completing a ride that moves us closer in our efforts to stop diabetes.”
