The City of Del Mar is sorry to announce the cancellation of the annual Penguin Plunge on New Year's Day to comply with public health orders.

Traditionally, the event draws many hundreds of visitors to 17th Street beach to greet the New Year and wash away the old with a dip in the chilly Pacific.

"We will miss gathering with everyone at the beach for this popular tradition," said Jon Edelbrock, Community Services Director and Lifeguard Chief.

The 2021 plunge would have marked the event's 35th straight year.
