A power outage on Monday evening interrupted a City Council meeting and darkened thousands of home in Del Mar and surrounding communities.

According to SDG&E, the outage at 7:16 p.m. affected 4,228 customers served by two circuits in Del Mar, Torrey Pines, Sorrento Valley, University City, North City West and Fairbanks Ranch. 

The utility is assessing the blackout to determine its cause and estimates power to be restored at 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Emergency power was activated at the Del Mar Civic Center but a remote meeting of the City Council, in which most attendees participate from home, was cut short. The meeting will resume at a time to be determined.
